Though this kind of crime is a rarity in the Philippines, it is worthwhile to study and understand what causes our gay sisters to be involved in gruesome crimes.
The Filipino Family is quite intact and is in fact extended. Extended in the sense that children above 18 continue to stay with their parents even when they grow old until they have and raise their own children. The family may also include their Aunts and Uncles and cousins etc. etc. Social, Family, Spiritual and Environmental support abounds every Filipino. Thus committing a gay murder crime is very rare unless sensationalized by some irresponsible journalists.
In reality, no society is an exception in committing crimes not to mention serial killings.
There are numerous factors indeed what drives a person to commit suicide or kill another person.
Why talk about gay serial killers? Or... What is a Serial Killer?
A serial killer is a person who murders three or more people over a period of more than thirty days, with a "cooling off" period between each murder, and whose motivation for killing is largely based on psychological gratification. Often, a sexual element is involved with the killings. The murders may have been attempted or completed in a similar fashion and the victims may have had something in common; for example, occupation, race, appearance, sex, or age group.
Serial killers are not the same as mass murderers, who commit multiple murders at one time; nor are they spree killers, who commit murders in two or more locations with virtually no break in between. Coinage of the English term serial killer is commonly attributed to former FBI Special Agent Robert Ressler in the 1970s. The concept had been described earlier, e.g. by German police inspector Ernst Gennat coining the same term in 1930.
Craig Young wrote:
According to crime writer Harold Schechter, only about fourteen percent of all serial killers have been gay, including Dennis Nilssen, Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy. Of female serial killers, only Aileen Wuornos was identifiably lesbian. Still others rape, murder and/or mutilate anyone unlucky enough to come across them, no matter what age, ethnicity or gender, like nineteenth century French serial killer Joseph Vacher, Russia’s Andrei Chikatelo, or paedophile and deranged fundamentalist Albert Fish in the twenties.
What turns someone into a serial killer? Many theories abound. According to several FBI investigators, serial killers tend to mostly be single white males, who are moderately intelligent but have poor educational histories, often working as unskilled labourers. They usually come from abusive or dysfunctional families, usually with criminal, mentally ill and/ alcohol and drug addicted parents who sexually, physically and emotionally abuse them. This leads the individual serial killer to develop his or her own mental health problems, often resulting in suicide attempts. They may also have an interest in predatory forms of paraphilia.
Canadian psychologist Robert Hare argues that psychopaths display about twenty discernable personality attributes. They possess a veneer of charm, but are also egotistical, have low interest thresholds, are prone to deceive others, connive to do so, and lack remorse or guilt for their behaviour. They also manifest shallow emotions, lack of empathy, callousness toward others, poor social skills, early behavioural problems, difficulties with strategic reasoning, poor impulse control, irresponsibility, serial monogamy or promiscuity, criminal youth, failure to follow bail conditions and versatility in prior criminal behaviour.
Starkly though, their victims are often the poor and disposed, whether male or female, often members of ethnic minorities, transients or sex workers, ironically often themselves on the run from their own abusive and dysfunctional family. Perhaps that is the final irony. While we rightly abhor the carnage of serial killers, there wouldn’t be a reservoir of victims if not for contemporary social service cutbacks or gaps in those services.
Wikipedia adds:
Serial killers in the United States tend to share the following general characteristics:
1. The majority are single, white males. However, there are scores of recorded cases of non-Caucasian serial killers, such as Coral Watts, Wayne Williams, Timothy Spencer, Charles Ng, Angel Maturino Reséndiz, Richard Ramirez, George Russell, and serial snipers John Muhammad and Lee Malvo.
2. They are often intelligent, with IQs in the "bright normal" range.
3. Often they have trouble staying employed. Usually they have menial jobs as well.
4. They tend to come from unstable families.
5. As children, they are typically abandoned by their fathers and raised by domineering mothers.
6. Their families often have criminal, psychiatric and alcoholic histories.
7. They were often abused—emotionally, physically and/or sexually—by a family member.
8. They have high rates of suicide attempts.
9. From an early age, many are intensely interested in voyeurism, fetishism, and sadomasochistic pornography.
10. More than 60 percent wet their beds beyond the age of 12.
11. Many are fascinated with fire starting.
12. They are involved in sadistic activity or torturing small animals.
However, these are not always the case, as there are exceptions to this.
Psychosis is rarely noted among serial killers. The predominant psychiatric diagnosis noted in the group tends toward the psychopathic, meaning they suffer from traits within a specific cluster of dysfunctional personality characteristics, those most commonly associated with antisocial personality disorder or dissocial personality disorder. Psychopaths lack empathy and guilt, are egocentric and impulsive, and do not conform to social, moral and legal norms. Instead, psychopaths often follow a distinct set of rules which they have created for themselves. They may appear to be normal and often quite charming, a state of adaptation that psychiatrist Hervey Cleckley named the "mask of sanity". Although psychopathy is not an official term in the DSM-IV, it is a disorder that involves traits that are both antisocial as well as narcissistic.
Let it be reminded that this do not imply a causal relationship between homosexuality and serial killing.
Serial killers and their victims include people from all races, cultures, nationalities, economic background, educational levels, genders, and sexual orientations. Because serial killers are so rare, it is impossible to use any demographic indicator as a predictor. There are no "rules" and all apparent trends have been broken. But some general observations can be made.
Serial killers are nearly always men (93%). Furthermore, of the relatively few female serial killers, one third of them worked in partnership with males.
